About Keyboard Test
Keyboard Test is a free collection of browser tools for checking a computer keyboard: whether every key registers, whether any key chatters or sticks, how many keys register at once, how quickly you can react to a prompt, and what name and code each key sends.
What the site is
Keyboard Test is a small, independent site with one job: telling you whether a keyboard works. The tests are free, need no download and work on any current browser on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS.
Why it exists
A keyboard rarely fails all at once. One key starts typing twice, a row stops responding after a spill, a laptop key sticks when the machine is warm. These faults are hard to prove by feel, and most people only want a straight answer: is it the keyboard, or is it the computer?
Each test on this site isolates one behaviour and shows the raw events the browser receives, so you can decide for yourself and show the evidence to a seller, a repair shop or a support agent.
How the tests work
Every test uses the standard keyboard events a browser already provides. When you press a key, the browser reports a key-down event with the key's physical code; when you release it, a key-up event. The keyboard test maps those events onto a diagram, the ghosting test counts how many are down at once, and the what key am I pressing tool prints the raw values.
Because a browser sits between the keyboard and the page, there are things it cannot see. The Fn key is handled inside the keyboard and never reaches the computer as a key. The operating system takes some keys for itself, such as the Windows key or the volume keys. And the delay between a key switch closing and the event arriving in the browser includes the keyboard, its connection and the operating system, so the latency test measures reaction time for comparing keyboards rather than hardware latency in isolation. Where a limit matters, the page for that test explains it.
Nothing you press inside a test is sent to our servers. See the privacy policy for details.
Corrections and feedback
If a test gives a result that looks wrong on your hardware, or an explanation on the site is inaccurate, tell us through the contact page. Include the keyboard model, operating system and browser so we can reproduce it.
